How to Make Oat Milk (Or Any Plant-Based Milk) in 5 Minutes
Whether you’re looking to make plant-based milk at home to save money, avoid seed oils and microplastics, or reduce waste, you’ve found yourself in the right place. And if you want to know how to make make oat milk (or almond, or coconut, or soy, or cashew…you get the drift) in the fastest, easiest way possible, Almond Cow’s Milk Maker is the kitchen tool to make it all happen – and more.
A couple of years ago I did some research on how to make oat milk at home, and started doing the whole blending and straining process – and while I was able to keep up with it for a bit, I ended up falling out of the habit because it just wasn’t convenient enough for me to stick with it on a weekly basis. So I went back to buying oat milk for my coffee, and almond milk for my smoothies, tail between my legs. That’s until I tried Almond Cow* – and it totally changed the game.
And a big PSA: Almond Cow is currently offering an early Black Friday deal where you can get $55 off when you spend $200 or more!
It’s the perfect holiday gift (or gift to yourself) that’s equal parts practical and fun.
Let’s get into how to make oat milk (or any plant-based milk) and my honest review of Almond Cow.

TL;DR: The Almond Cow Milk Maker is the essential kitchen tool you didn’t know you needed.
There are few food items that I consume every single day, and plant-based milk is one of them. And I’m not alone; nearly half of Americans consume plant-based milk regularly.
And while I’m thrilled that the plant-based milk market has grown so substantially, there are also plenty of reasons why some of us would prefer to make it at home: be it health, sustainability, toxin/seed oil avoidance, or reduced cost (check out their cost savings calculator) just to name a few.
I know what you’re thinking – ‘Anj, I hardly have time to shower some days. What makes you think I possibly have the time to make my own milk?” I hear you, and I’m with you. But hear me out when I say: the Almond Cow Milk Maker gives you delicious, fresh, additive-free milk in….drumroll…
Five minutes. Five! Minutes! That’s including prep and the time it takes for the Milk Maker to work its magic.
Now you’re probably thinking, ‘ok, that’s pretty fast. But what about clean up?‘
Less than one minute of clean-up. Truly – it couldn’t be easier to clean.

Almond Cow is just a miracle product, and I can’t believe I went so long without this tool that I now consider to be completely essential.
And, you can make so many other things with this appliance in addition to plant milk; from coffee creamers, to flavored milks (chocolate milk, anyone?) to incredible items using the leftover pulp: pancakes, granola, donuts, cream cheese, cookies, crackers, you name it.
So far, I’ve made:
Oat milk, almond milk, coco-cash milk (half coconut, half cashew milk), energy balls using the coco-cash pulp, and cinnamon maple cookies using the almond pulp (pictured left – highly recommend the animal-shaped cookie cutters to nurture your inner child).
Up next for me is Almond Cow’s recipe for a birthday cake coffee creamer using macadamia milk as the base – yum.
I’m also very intrigued by their donut recipe using almond pulp.
So, here’s how to make oat milk – or any plant-based milk – with the Almond Cow Milk Maker.
1. Choose your base
With Almond Cow, you can make plant-based milk with an array of bases, including:
- Almond
- Oat
- Coconut
- Cashew
- Macadamia
- Soy
- Pistachio
- Flax seed
- Hemp seed
In keeping with the brand’s name sake, let’s use the almonds as the example here. If you’re more in the oat milk camp, it’s the same process, but with whole grain oats that are soaked overnight, and just 1/2 tsp of an oil like walnut or avocado since oats don’t have any natural fats.
You can also have fun here with adding natural sweeteners like dates or maple syrup, as well as warming spices like cinnamon or vanilla.

2. Fill the Almond Cow base with 6 cups of water (recipe yields 6 cups).
Then, add your base (any any other ingredients – usually a pinch of sea salt as well) to the filter basket. Here I’m using raw almonds, sea salt, and vanilla.
3. Attach the filter basket to the top of the Almond Cow and twist to secure.
Then, attach the top to the stainless steel base.
4. Plug in the Almond Cow and press the “cow” start button.
Very satisfying to press that button, I might add. The Milk Maker will run through three automatic stages, and when the light stops flashing your milk is ready!

5. Remove the top of the Almond Cow and set it in a collector cup for easy clean up.
Be sure to save your scraps to make delicious energy balls, groats, cookies, and more.
6. Done!
Seriously, that’s it. Pour it up and enjoy in coffee, cereal, smoothies, baking recipes, you name it.
