The Best Supplements for Vegans (Sharing My Top 3 Picks)
If you’re vegan and want to make sure you’re getting the right nutrients in your diet, you’ve come to the right place. I have a certificate in plant-based nutrition from T. Colin Campbell’s Center for Nutrition Studies, where I acquired a deep reservoir of knowledge – based on the latest research – grounded in all of the elements that comprise a balanced plant-based diet, and what the best supplements for vegans are.
The TL;DR – you really don’t need to supplement differently than most omnivores. The only supplement that is truly essential for vegans is B12, but, many people are deficient in B12 anyways – irrespective of whether they’re vegan or not. There are two others that I also recommend and personally take, myself, to really make sure all of my boxes are covered. But I can’t stress enough that these are supplements I would recommend to anyone, because most people aren’t able to get enough of these micronutrients through diet, alone.
Alright, let’s get into what I believe are the three best supplements for vegans (and the three I always take myself, and recommend to others).
Vitamin B12

Consider B12 your holy grail. While it’s known as *the* best supplement for vegans to take, it is beneficial for literally anyone. So if you take one supplement, let it be B12. While it can be found in animal proteins and some plant proteins, there are a lot of people that don’t get enough B12 through food, and that number increases for people over the age of 60. It’s an essential micronutrient that supports the central nervous system by creating and sustaining healthy nerve cells. B12 also helps to create healthy red blood cells, which take on the hefty job of transporting oxygen throughout the body and maintaining a healthy immune system.
And while B12 is doing a lot behind the scenes, it also can have noticeable effects on how you feel, overall. For starters, it is considered to be one of the most essential micronutrients for supporting healthy energy levels by stimulating the adrenal glands and helping to convert carbs to glucose, which is what your body uses to create and sustain energy. B12 can also improve sleep quality by increasing the body’s melatonin production naturally, and can facilitate higher quality, more restorative sleep.
In terms of the best-quality B12 supplement for vegans, I really like Global Healing’s Vitamin B12 for the following reasons:
- It’s in liquid form, which is optimal for absorption.
- It’s a high dose B12 – so it’s great for anyone deficient in B12 or that is experiencing fatigue. But because it’s in a convenient dropper format, you can easily reduce the amount; so if you don’t fall into those two categories, you can adjust accordingly. Further, there is no established Tolerable Upper Intake Level for B12, meaning it is considered to be safe even at high doses.
- The formula is a combination of methylcobalamin, adenosylcobalamin, and hydroxocobalamin. The former two are active forms of B12 that are readily absorbed by the body, and the latter is converted to active forms in the body as-needed.

Omega Fatty Acids

Omegas are a nutritional powerhouse that support a healthy heart, brain, eyes, skin, and more. But, different omegas offer different benefits; which is why I love Global Healing’s Omega 3•6•7•9 formula because it combines all of the omega fatty acids your body needs to thrive, from healthy cell formation, to hormone and inflammation regulation.
Omega-3 and omega-9 fatty acids have incredible heart health benefits, and can help reduce triglyceride levels, decrease blood pressure and inflammation, and improve heart function. Omega-3 fatty acids EHA and DHA are also immensely beneficial for brain health and support your neural pathways, and also help support healthy skin (as do Omega-6 and Omega-7). The latter also helps with gut health!
In terms of the best supplements for vegans, Global Healing’s Omega 3•6•7•9 is the only omega supplement I’ve found that provides a hefty dose of all four omega fatty acids. I also love the combination of omega sources, i.e.:
- Organic virgin cold pressed perilla seed oil – one of the highest concentrations of omega-3 (ALA) fatty acids, made even more nutrient dense through Global Healing’s virgin cold-pressed extraction method.
- Organic virgin cold pressed flaxseed oil – this one is also packed with bioavailable omega-3s (ALA) and is a known nutritional powerhouse.
- Organic virgin cold pressed sacha inchi oil: sacha inchi is a super nutritious plant that comes from the Amazon, and is also known for being very anti-inflammatory. Global Healing’s sacha inchi oil is packed with omega-3, omega-6, as well as vitamin E.
- Organic seaberry CO2 extract: seaberry (also known as sea buckthorn) is a superfruit packed with omega-3, omega-6, omega-7, and omega-9 fatty acids. It also has mega good-for-you antioxidants.
Calcium & Magnesium

I’ve started to pay a lot more attention to my bone health now that I’m well into my thirties. I prioritize strength training, which is majorly helpful for bone density. But in terms of the best supplements for vegans – or anyone – a high-quality calcium and magnesium supplement is extremely beneficial. However, it’s super important to take one that has the right ratio.
Here’s what makes Global Healing’s Calcium & Magnesium supplement is so powerful:
- Global Healing uses a powerful 2:1 ratio of calcium orotate to magnesium orotate, which is the most bioavailable and absorbable form of calcium. A lot of the calcium and magnesium supplements out there don’t have the right ratio, and it’s essential for ensuring calcium regulation.
- The form of calcium and magnesium used in this supplement – calcium and magnesium orotate – ensures that calcium is more readily available for your bones and musculoskeletal system to use.
- This ratio of calcium and magnesium makes this particular supplement even more beneficial for nervous system and heart health, as well.
- This supplement also helps to support a restful sleep, and has been shown to help with muscle cramps as well.
There you have it! The three best supplements for vegans.
As always, be sure to consult your doctor when evaluating the best supplements for your own health. But as a rule of thumb, these three supplements are my go-tos, and I trust Global Healing to provide the best quality supplement possible. They’ve been around since 1998, and are extremely committed to developing high-potency, highly bioavailable, third-party tested and GMO-free supplements (many of which are also certified USDA organic). So in terms of quality, purity, and efficacy, they really are a brand whose ethos I stand behind. What’s better is that they use glass bottles to reduce plastic use – which we know is equally as harmful to our bodies as it is to the planet.
