My Hungryroot Review

If you’ve read any of my content, you probably know that I’m a huge advocate for meal delivery services. Anything that helps folks get nourishing, plant-based food on the table is considered a win in my book. So I’m always excited to try different companies in the space, and have put together a Hungryroot review to break down my experience with them.

Hungryroot is great because they offer meal kits, prepared meals, and groceries all in one service – so it’s super easy to customize based upon your household’s needs. They have a ton of variety across the board, too; their recipes offer a wide array of cuisines and flavors, even for their vegan and plant-based offering. And I was super excited to learn that they’ve partnered with Sakara on a line of prepared meals, so I of course had to try those out, as well. Hungryroot’s grocery items are also fantastic; they offer everything from produce, to proteins, to packaged goods, and they carry a lot of the healthy snack brands that I love.

How does Hungryroot work?

Hungryroot is a subscription model that allows you to tailor your deliveries according to your needs. Their default subscription is a weekly plan, but you can skip up to three weeks of deliveries at a time. You can make changes to your next delivery until your shopping window closes (you have about 3-4 days to select your meals or make changes to your cart before the order is placed). You can also pause your subscription for up to 8 weeks.

Hungryroot also uses a credit system, i.e., each individual grocery item or meal is assigned a credit value, and they fill your cart box based upon the credits allotted to your specific plan. That said, you can still modify your order as much as you’d like, and go above or below the number of credits in your plan. Plus, any unused credits are rolled over to your next shipment.

When you sign up, Hungryroot asks you some questions to get a better understanding of your tastes and dietary preferences, called your Food Profile; and that will inform the types of meals or groceries that are offered to you for each delivery. This is where I was pleasantly surprised to see such a range of vegan options, and really appreciated that they have an entire vegan category for both groceries and meals.

Hungryroot’s service starts at about $69 per week, so it’s also a very affordable meal delivery option.

The Hungryroot Meal Kits I Tried

Here’s my review of Hungryroot’s “recipes,” all of which took me 20 minutes or less to prepare. The meals are all simple, directions are easy to follow, and it was perfect for busy weeknights that I wanted a home cooked meal without the mental labor of grocery shopping and meal prep.

Plant-Based Chicken Green Goddess Salad

This filling, tasty recipe was ready in a whopping eight minutes. I just cooked the plant-based chicken in the air fryer (made by Tindle, a new-to-me brand that Hungryroot put me on to), and the pre-chopped salad kit was ready for me to throw into a bowl and toss with their yummy green goddess dressing and seed mix. This also yielded two very large salads. All of the Hungryroot meal kits I tried yielded 2-3 servings, which was great.

Cuban Spiced Black Beans and Cheese Quesadilla

Simple but so tasty. The spiced black beans were perfect, and I loved the green chile dipping sauce that this recipe came with. This also took me under 10 minutes to prepare.

Lemongrass Tofu Nuggets + Blackened Veggie Stir Fry

I made this for a friend that came over for dinner one night and we both loved the meal. The lemongrass flavor in the pre-seasoned tofu was so nice, and the blackened zucchini, bell peppers and onions were the perfect accompaniment. This one took about 15-20 minutes to prepare.

Hungryroot x Sakara Sweet Potato Chipotle Salad

I am a huge Sakara fan, and was thrilled to learn that they have a line of meals with Hungryroot – I had no idea prior to trying out the service. And, to no one’s surprise, the food was fantastic, super fresh, flavorful and light. This salad was awesome, and I also loved their Vegan Caesar salad that I’d actually had previously through ordering directly from Sakara.

I ordered a few of my favorite sweets and snacks, and a couple of new ones like Ella’s Flats Everything Seed Crackers and Big Picture Foods Amfissa Olives – both of which were great. And, I couldn’t resist ordering my go-to, better-for-you candies from Better Sour and Smart Sweets.
