The Best Vegan Food in Amsterdam
I spent a handful of days in Amsterdam recently (my first time!) and completely fell in love with its charming canals, the kind people that live there, and, yes, the incredibly delicious food. Amsterdam is known for having some of the top plant-based restaurants in the world, and let me tell you – it lived up to the hype. So, I’m extremely excited to share the best vegan food I had in Amsterdam to help guide your own culinary adventures there.
I did a proper food tour of the city over ~4ish days, and while I tried to hit as many spots as I could, there are still so many places that I didn’t make it to. But fear not, I’ve included in this list both the restaurants I tried (and recommend) and those that are at the top of my list for next time.
Let’s get into my round-up of the best vegan food in Amsterdam: from sit-down restaurants and fine dining, to bakeries, to fast-casual joints.
The Best Vegan Food in Amsterdam
If you try any of these spots while you’re in Amsterdam, you’re in for a treat.
Madre (Jordaan)

I learned from my lovely server, Ava, that Madre was actually inspired from LA’s Gracias Madre, which I of course frequent very often and love. So it was no surprise that Madre is also known for being one of the best vegan restaurants in Amsterdam, and the vibe was also fantastic. It just so happened that I dined there on their Taco Tuesday where they have a great deal and amazing DJ playing all night. But the restaurant is a super lively, beautifully-designed space with excellent Mexican food – despite being in the heart of Amsterdam. I highly recommend ordering the guacamole, which is made to order on a cart that brought to your table (fun touch à la Casablanca here in LA). I had the 3D printed birria tacos for my main which were so tasty (pictured above). The date and sticky toffee tamale I ordered for dessert was also sensational.
Hearth (Amsterdam-Oost)

This restaurant’s menu was easily the most unexpected and creative one I experienced during my visit, but it was also such a fun dinner thanks to their great bartender (hi, Saul)! He really walked me through the owner and chef’s vision for an experimental menu that pulls broadly from both Asian and Indian cuisine. I had the gundu dosa starter (pictured) with cherry tomato salsa, coriander yoghurt and kalamansi gel, and king oyster mushroom “scallops” as my main that sit atop red lentil dal with confit potato, tomato caviar, and puffed lotus seeds (both were amazing). I devoured the orange curd dessert nestled in a light wafer and drizzled with pumpkin caramel and pecans. Hearth is such a gem of a restaurant with love poured in from every angle: the service, the menu, and overall care put into every touchpoint make this an unmissable experience and easily some of the best vegan food in Amsterdam.
Bonboon (Jordaan)

Bonboon is where you go in Amsterdam for a true plant-based fine dining experience. Located in the beautiful Hotel Mercier, the restaurant itself feels refined but not stuffy, and most importantly offers a five course prix fixe menu that changes seasonally and will completely blow your mind. My decadent meal included the following:
- Starter: A pizzetta with salted tofu curds, zucchini trifolati, apricot, basil, with a pine nut dressing and sea vegetables.
- Intermediate: Grilled artichoke and green asparagus with smoked cashew cream, topped with a mint, green olive and lemon salsa verde, fresh peas and a cashew and olive crumb.
- Main: Gnocchi (pictured) with fava bean creme, summer greens, smoked paprika butter, fresh fava beans and pickled lemon.
- Pre-dessert: Salted almond ricotta with fennel and lemon sorbet, lemon thyme compote and an almond praline filo cracker.
- Dessert: Chamomile mousse with sour cherry gel, torched meringue, pistachio tuile and fresh berries (this was my favorite)!
Soil Vegan Cafe (Amsterdam West)

Soil Vegan Cafe is a great fast-casual spot for elevated comfort food It was the first place I ate in Amsterdam, and I went in for more of a snack than a meal as I had dinner reservations later; but their menu was exactly what I needed. I ordered the pulled jackfruit tacos which were very tasty, light, but super satisfying – I loved the gochugang mayo the tacos were drizzled with. But they also have very hearty mains: their asian noodle bowls get very high praise, as do their several burger variations. The bitterballen are also supposed to be fantastic.
Alchemist Garden (Vondelpark)

This is such a sweet little raw food/juice shop meets herbal apothecary. The woman working there was a friend of the owner, and so lovely and genuine. She made me a delightfully refreshing watermelon juice right on the spot when I told her I was feeling a bit dehydrated. It’s right next to Vondelpark which is a must-visit, sprawling park with beautiful rose gardens. So you can grab a juice (and maybe some tasty cacao balls, which I also tried and were divine) and head over to the park after.
The Best Vegan Pastries in Amsterdam
All of the best vegan pastries, desserts, and plant-based confections I sampled in Amsterdam.
Margo’s (Jordaan, Bellamyplein)

I think it’s safe to say that Margo’s was my favorite spot in Amsterdam. It is just so special; and I also had the privilege of meeting their co-founder, Ayden, when I popped into their Jordaan location on my first morning in town. You can just feel the warmth, love, and attention to detail that has been poured into Margo’s – and their delicious baked goods – from the second you step inside. And let me tell you, their pastries are phenomenal and some of the best I’ve had in my entire life. I tried their cardamom bun (twice, one from each location – it was that good), Palestinian danish, and salted tahini cookie (thanks, Ayden, for making sure I was able to try the latter – it really was spectacular, as well as their focaccia). Each item was a 10/10, no notes. The pastries were incredibly fluffy, light, not too sweet, but so sumptuous. Margo’s is an absolute must-visit, and easily some of the best vegan food you’ll find in Amsterdam, and even in the world.
Little Plant Pantry (Helmersbuurt)

Little Plant Pantry is a zero-waste, bulk goods store meets plant-based eatery. I am so glad that I stumbled in here; although I was only visiting town briefly and wasn’t able to bring back any bulk goods in my suitcase, I did, however, have plenty of room in my stomach for vegan desserts. I tried both their cheesecake and tiramisu, and both were divine. This place is such a haven for conscious eating and shopping, and in addition to offering fresh desserts and pastries on their daily menu, they also make what I hear is some of the best homemade vegan food in Amsterdam like soups, curries, and lasagna.
Mister Nata (Haarlemmerbuurt, De Pijp, Jordaan)

As a Portuguese-American, I’ll always love a pastel de nata. But *vegan* pastel de nata isn’t something you can find easily, particularly in the U.S. But, lucky me, Mister Nata has not one, not two, but three locations in Amsterdam. So you’d better believe I made their pasteis a priority during my visit; and let me tell you, they did not disappoint. You truly can’t tell the difference between a vegan and non-vegan pastel de nata here: they’re flaky, creamy, with the perfect little char on top of the custard, just as you’d expect in a traditional Portuguese bakery.
Happy Pig Pancakes (De Wallen)

I had never tried a Dutch Pancake before and, well, when in Rome! If you haven’t experienced the joy of eating one of these yet, it’s literally like an American pancake and a French crepe had a baby. They’re just so delicious, light, and fluffy, and Happy Pig is such a great place to try these heavenly delicacies because over half of their menu is vegan. I opted for the apple cinnamon topping with vegan whipped cream, and I inhaled the entire thing (it was a very generous portion, but that didn’t stop me).
Saint-Jean (Jordaan)

Saint-Jean is a fabulous bakery known for their cruffins, which sadly they were out of by the time I arrived in the afternoon, so be sure to go earlier in the day to make sure you snag one! But I still wanted to get something while I was there, so I ordered a matcha raspberry pan suisse, and it was delightful and light.
Best Vegan Food in Amsterdam: My ‘Saved for Later’ Spots
Already counting down the days until my next vegan food tour of Amsterdam, and these establishments are at the top of my list.
Meatless District (Bilderdijkstraat)
So bummed I didn’t make it here! Meatless District gets high praise for it’s plant-based takes on creative shared plates and comfort food, alike, and is known for having some of the best vegan food in Amsterdam.
Koffie Ende Koeck (Westerpark)
Another one I am so sad to have missed, because it looks *so* up my alley. A super charming, fully vegan cafe that serves afternoon tea, pastries, breakfast and lunch, Koffie ende Koeck is known for its comforting plant-based menu and cozy environment. I can just picture myself having a lovely afternoon tea here on a chilly Amsterdam day – hopefully sometime in the not-so-distant future 🙂
Veganees (Oosterparkbuurt)
A Southeast Asian street food spot that’s fully vegan and has excellent customer reviews.
Vegan Temple Bar (Grachtengordel)
This place is one of the more popular vegan restaurants in Amsterdam, known for it’s stellar vegan burgers, and they also have pastas, bowls, and a very tempting dessert menu.
Green Farmers (Jordaan)
Another fan favorite vegan burger joint I’m dying to try next time.
Chun Cafe (Jordaan, Binnenstad)
While not fully vegan, Chun Cafe is known for it’s tofu puff toast that is apparently the most coveted item on their menu.
Kazik Amsterdam (Amsterdam-West)
You wouldn’t expect to find a Polish establishment in Amsterdam with ample vegan options, but this is 2026, baby! This brunch and lunch spot offers vegan zapiekanka that I hear is out-of-this-world good.
Van Holland Stroopwafels (De Wallen)
Jail time for me, because I didn’t consume but one stroopwafel while in Amsterdam. But when I’m there next, this will be one of my first stops, I swear, because they are known for having excellent vegan options.
Did I miss any of the best vegan restaurants in Amsterdam?
To re-state the obvious, Amsterdam has one of the best vegan food scenes in the world. Every dining experience I had was not only truly delicious, but so enjoyable because of the incredibly warm and gracious owners and staff I had the privilege of meeting at each establishment. I fell in love with this city because of the food, people, walkability, and progressive, welcoming spirit that is felt throughout.
